Patrolman Dickman was shot and killed after being alerted to a disturbance on Thursday, November 27, 1913. Five men had surrounded a suspect who was waving a pistol in the air. The suspect fired into the air twice and then began to run away. He suddenly swung around a telephone pole and fired again, striking Patrolman Dickman in the chest.

Patrolman Dickman had been a Kankakee Police Officer for six months. He was the first Kankakee Police Officer to die in the line of duty.

Officer Lezotte was assigned to traffic control at a fire scene Saturday, November 17, 1962. A fire burned the Lassers Furniture Company on South Schuyler Avenue and while performing his duty, he collapsed with a heart attack. Officer Lezotte was rushed to St. Mary's Hospital where he died. He was the second Kankakee Police Officer to die in the line of duty.

Officer Lezotte is survived by two sons and five daughters.

Patrolman Anthony Samfay was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Thursday, October 17, 1996, on Fair St. near Greenwood Avenue. As he was returning to his squad car with the violator's driver’s license, Eric Lee exited his car and shot Patrolman Samfay five times in the back in front of a loaded school bus. The suspect, who had no prior criminal record, was later arrested without incident after car-jacking another vehicle. Lee had left his license at the scene and was found in Patrolman Samfay's possession.

Eric Lee was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. On January 11, 2003, the outgoing Illinois governor George Ryan of Kankakee commuted the death sentences of all 167 Illinois death-row inmates, including the death sentence of Eric Lee, as one of his last acts in office.

Patrolman Samfay had served with the Kankakee Police Department for one year. Officer Samfay was the third Kankakee Police Officer to die in the line of duty.
